Serse- An Opera by Isaac Wittenberg
$10
All performances will be at 7pm at Crooked Tree Art Center
In middle school, Isaac fell in love with opera and made it a personal goal to compose one of his own someday. Since March of 2017, he began his compositional journey and he is proud to announce that his work will be performed at the Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey on May 31, June 1, and June 2 of 2018.
In the summer of 2017, Isaac teamed up with Zoe Marshall-Rashid, Ben Harpe, and Emily Harpe to perform the musical "The Last Five Years" by Jason Robert Brown. It was a life-changing experience and I am honored to be working alongside Zoe and Ben again in this production.
The opera is about Serse, the King of Persia, who longs to marry Romilda. However, Romilda is also loved by Arsamene - the brother of Serse. Meanwhile, Atalanta is in love with Arsamene. Amastre, Serse's fiancée, whom he has abandoned, disguises herself as a man and seeks revenge. Atalanta's pretense that Arsamene really loves her and the insistence of Serse on marrying Romilda cause a series of complications, enlivened by the comic servant Elviro. Eventually, all is resolved when Serse reunites with Amastre and Arsamene reunites with Romilda. I chose this libretto because the plot struck me as very exciting and perfect for a dramatic opera. This libretto was originally used by Geroge Frederic Handel for his opera of the same title, first performed on April 15, 1738.
